CENTRAL HIGH HOSTS STUDENT VOTER OUTREACH EVENT

Central High School, 4525 North Central, Phoenix, Arizona 85012, is proud to welcome Vote 18 on Friday, October 31, from 10:00 am to noon. Two classes will be held in the Auditorium, the first from 10:00 to 10:45, the second from 10:50 to 11:35. The event will raise awareness of the upcoming election; emphasize the importance of civic engagement and the importance of voting in the November election. Vote 18 is an organization that works with high school students to increase political awareness, promote dialogue and encourage today’s young people to become life-long voters and community leaders.

Vote 18 is honored to work with State Representatives Chad Campbell, David Lujan and Steve Gallardo to bring this program to the Phoenix Union High School District. Lujan and Gallardo both serve as members on the PUHSD Governing Board. “Partnering with elected officials who are dedicated to increasing the number of Arizona’s youth who vote is critical to our outreach effort” said Vote 18 co-founder and Executive Director Marco Ceglie. “Our mission is to energize young Americans to become lifelong voters and engaged citizens.” Working with the students of Central High, Vote 18 will help increase the numbers of Arizona’s youth who vote and who are civically engaged in their community.

“I am excited to have our students take part in this important voter outreach event,” said Chris Jones, Central High School Principal. “It is important for our students to understand the value of their vote and to make their voices heard at the ballot box.”

In 2004, young people aged 18-24 voted at a lower rate than any other age group, with 42% turning out to the polls compared to almost 60% for every other age demographic. Vote 18 works to reverse this trend by making civics come alive in the classroom by leading an interactive class discussion to inspire young Americans to become civically involved lifelong voters. Vote 18 is strictly non-partisan, does not endorse or support any candidate or issue and is provided to schools free of charge.

The teachers and administrators from the Phoenix Union High School District have provided a tremendous opportunity for Vote 18” said Vote 18 co-founder and Executive Director Marco Ceglie.“ They are committed to opening up opportunities for their students and encouraging civic participation.”

The Vote 18 program has been taught in 18 states to over 15,000 students. The Phoenix event is one stop on Vote 18: Road Trip USA!, a 3-month, 16-state tour that will bring Vote 18 to classrooms across the country. Vote 18’s goal is to not only register young people to vote for the upcoming election, but to teach them the value of their vote so they become empowered, engaged life-long voters.

Vote 18 is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is available to schools free of charge.

All guests and media must check in with the administration office prior to entering the campus.
